When Hyper-Independence Takes Over
You can be capable, competent and accomplished, and still be carrying far too much.
Somewhere along the way, many of us learned that relying on ourselves was safer, easier or more reliable than asking someone else for help. We became the people who figure things out, get things done, hold everything together and rarely let anyone see how much we’re carrying.
But what happens when independence becomes our default, even when it is no longer serving us?
In this session, we’ll explore the origins and costs of hyper-independence, including how workplace expectations, family patterns and past experiences can shape our relationship with asking for and receiving support. We’ll consider the difference between healthy autonomy and the expectation that we should be able to manage everything ourselves.
We’ll have an opportunity to examine where our energy is going, identify what we might be carrying unnecessarily and practise making room for support.
You’ll leave with: A renewed understanding of your relationship with independence and a practical way to begin asking for and receiving support.
Facilitated by Myrna McCallum, lawyer, former prosecutor, adjudicator and internationally recognized educator, whose work explores the intersections of trauma, relationships, workplace culture and institutional responsibility.
