The Unwritten Rules of Belonging
Everyone talks about belonging. But who gets to decide what belonging looks like?
Workplaces often speak about inclusion, connection and belonging without examining the conditions that determine who actually experiences them.
There are the formal rules, and then there are the unwritten ones: the expectations about how to speak, behave, dress, communicate, disagree, participate and make ourselves acceptable to others. These expectations can have a profound influence on who feels welcome, who feels they must constantly adapt, and who is left on the margins.
In this session, we’ll explore the relationship between belonging, workplace culture, power and the unspoken expectations that shape our experiences of connection and acceptance. We’ll consider what it means to create environments where people don’t have to diminish or change themselves to be welcomed.
You’ll leave with: A more critical understanding of belonging and practical considerations for creating relationships and workplaces where people can participate with greater authenticity and dignity.
Facilitated by Myrna McCallum, lawyer, former prosecutor, adjudicator and internationally recognized educator, whose work explores the intersections of trauma, relationships, workplace culture and institutional responsibility.
