When People Shut Down
Silence on a team is almost never neutral.
Someone stops contributing in meetings. Someone agrees with everything. Someone turns polite and precise and gives us nothing. Someone leaves.
We tend to read those as attitude problems. More often they are protective responses, and they are telling us something about what the room has been like.
In this two hour Practice Session we look at what shutting down is doing for the person doing it, and what it is asking of the rest of us.
What we will look at
- Freeze, fawn, flight and fight as they show up in meetings and email, not in a textbook
- What a person is protecting when they go quiet
- The difference between having nothing to say and deciding it is not worth saying
- How our own responses invite or close down other people
- What it takes for someone to come back after they have shut down
- Questions that open a door without pushing anyone through it
Who this is for
Anyone whose work puts them close to other people. Leaders, HR and labour relations teams, union representatives, advocates, educators, and people working in health, justice and community services. You do not need a title to come.
