In this episode, I’m joined by River Shannon, a lawyer with QMUNITY and a member of the trans community she serves. River’s work offers a powerful example of what it can look like when legal practice is rooted in community, relationship, humility, care, compassion, and love. Her work through QMUNITY’s Legal Clinic helps queer, trans, and Two-Spirit people navigate legal systems that can often feel inaccessible, alienating, or unsafe.

We talk about what it means to serve your own community as a lawyer, the importance of being seen and understood by the person sitting across from you, and the ways that legal advocacy can become an act of care.

River’s work reminds us that access to justice is not only about knowing the law. It is also about creating spaces where people feel seen, respected, safe, and worthy of dignity. This is a conversation about law, community, identity, and the profound difference one caring lawyer can make.

This episode is dedicated to the memory of barbara findlay K.C.
